A vehicle that's overheating is a serious problem that warrants a mechanic's prompt attention. An engine will overheat when it gets too hot. When that happens, it's critical to do what you can to get the engine back to a normal operating temperature to avoid more serious and costly damage. If you are on the road, pull over as soon as you can safely do so, and contact a technician for a thorough evaluation of your vehicle and repairs.

Cooling System Leak

The cooling system is a series of belts, hoses, and other components that help provide the engine with the coolant fluid or antifreeze that it requires to run. Since it has so many parts, it's not unusual for the cooling system to develop leaks and cracks. A telltale sign that you have a cooling system leak on your hands is if you see a puddle of green or blue fluid under your car, which means that there is antifreeze leaking out of the system somewhere.

Thermostat Failure

The thermostat in your car's engine helps to regulate the flow of coolant fluid. The thermostat controls the engine's temperature by allowing sufficient amounts of coolant fluid to reach the engine and circulate through the cooling system. A thermostat failure keeps coolant fluid from cooling the engine, which leads to its overheating.

Incorrect Oil Levels

Low oil levels can also contribute to an engine's overheating. The engine needs a sufficient amount of oil to function correctly. Without adequate oil, the engine does not stay lubricated, which means it is prone to overheating. A leak in the system can cause the engine oil levels to drop below their normal amounts.

Heater Core Blockage

The car's engine contains a heater core, which will cause the engine to overheat if it gets blocked or otherwise clogged. The heater core allows coolant fluid to reach the engine, which it can't do if the fluid cannot move through due to a block.

Hoses and Belts

Within your car's cooling system are numerous hoses and belts. They work collectively to deliver coolant fluid to the engine and throughout the system. Several problems can arise with the belts and hoses. The belts can slip or break, and the hoses can become disconnected, cracked, or clogged. If any of these issues occur, your car will not get the right amount of coolant fluid needed to stay cool.
