How Often Should You Replace Your Windshield Wipers

As a rule, your windshield wipers should be replaced every six to 12 months. Since a lot can happen during that six-month window, it's best to keep a close eye on your windshield wipers and look for signs that they should be replaced.

Worn Rubber Blades

First of all, check the rubber blades on your windshield wipers at least once a month. These act as squeegees that wipe away water, ice, snow, and debris from your windshield. They can leave your windshield looking practically spotless when they're in good condition, but they are susceptible to damage. If your wiper blades are rough to the touch or there are noticeable cracks and gouges in the rubber, your wipers should be replaced.

Squeaky Windshield Wipers

If you hear a horrible squeaking or squealing sound whenever you use your windshield wipers, you should consider buying replacements. You might be able to get some use out of your current windshield wipers, but nobody likes to hear what amounts to nails on a chalkboard while they're driving.

Streaks On Your Windshield

Windshield wipers that are past their prime could leave streaks on your windshield. This is usually only a minor annoyance, but it will get worse until it starts to impair your vision when you drive. It's best to replace your windshield wipers when you start seeing streaks, especially if you've had your current wipers for longer than six months.

Rust

Finally, check your windshield wipers' metal arms and joints for rust whenever you check your rubber wiper blades. A little rust and corrosion won't exactly impair your vision or limit your ability to drive, but too much is a sign that your windshield wipers could break off. It's better to replace them than to suddenly find yourself without one on a rainy day.
