Some minor reshuffling of the standard and optional features on the various trims are apparent, and this can affect the buyer's decision regarding which trim to purchase. The Hybrid version is discontinued for 2020. Because of this lack of a hybrid option, buyers are encouraged to look closely at the two available engines. The larger turbocharged engine is available only on the Premium trim. Otherwise, the 2020 Chevrolet Malibu is unchanged from last year. The body contours, front- and rear-end design, and interior configuration remain the same.
Which Trims & Features are Available for 2020?
The base trim, designated as L, comes with keyless entry and ignition, air conditioning, steering wheel-mounted controls, and smartphone app integration. It's available in all of the color choices for this model. The next step up is the LS trim. This version adds on sound-reducing glass, OnStar, and eligibility for a few package options. The mid-level RS trim boasts power-adjustable front seats, upgraded upholstery, and exterior details, including a rear spoiler and a unique front grille design.
The LT trim adds on some high-tech goodies, including satellite radio and an upgraded information display. This version also comes with front-seat heating and dual-zone climate control. The range-topping Premier trim has all of the features of the LT and adds leather upholstery, a sunroof, a built-in navigation system, and a nine-speaker audio system.
The Malibu is quite roomy in the front seating area. Two adults can fit with ease in the rear seating area. The control layout is simple and easy to navigate. The higher trims come with GM's Chevrolet Link 3 infotainment system.
A Perfect Blend of Power and Fuel Efficiency
With the hybrid version discontinued for 2020, buyers have the option of two gasoline engines. The standard engine is a turbocharged 1.5L that sends a total of 160 horsepower to the front wheels. Transmission is continuously variable. The Premium trim gets a turbocharged 2.0L engine rated at 250 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. With the larger engine, the Malibu accelerates nicely, and drivers will experience little to no hesitation when the CVT adjusts the gear ratios. Handling is average for this class, and the nicely tuned suspension system allows tight cornering without excessive body roll.
2020 Chevrolet Malibu Safety Features
All 2020 Malibu trims, including the base L version, come with four-wheel ABS and antilock brakes, emergency braking preparation, an engine immobilizer, a post-collision safety system, daytime running lights, child seat anchors and tethers, stability and traction control, and tire pressure monitoring. Airbags include dual front and dual rear side-mounted bags.
Several package options are available, including driver aid packages that add on such features as forward collision mitigation with automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, pedestrian detection, and rear cross-traffic alert. The NHTSA gave the 2020 model a perfect five stars for overall front barrier crash protection and four stars for rollover protection.
